Henry J. Kaiser Center for the Arts Reopens

Heller Manus Architects is proud to share the Grand Reopening of the Henry J. Kaiser Center for the Arts, marking a major milestone for Oakland’s cultural scene after two decades of closure. We were honored to work closely with the City of Oakland and Orton Development to bring this important cultural landmark back to life for the community.

Originally constructed in 1914, the 115-year-old Beaux-Arts structure stands as a testament to the city’s enduring dedication to culture, community, and design excellence. Once the largest public assembly space west of the Mississippi River, the building has served for more than a century as a vibrant hub for performances, concerts, and civic gatherings. It hosted historic speeches by leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and performances by artists including Elvis Presley, James Brown, Bob Marley, and the Grateful Dead.

Thank you to everyone involved in restoring this iconic civic and cultural destination. We look forward to seeing Oakland’s premier arts and performing venue once again filled with life, creativity, and community.
