Prominently located in the Richmond district of San Francisco, this Neo-Classical designated landmark building is the largest single columbarium complex on the West Coast. The building, designed in 1898 by Bernard J.S. Cahill, is in the city’s original Lone Mountain Cemetery district. Heller Manus prepared a master plan for the development of integrated support facilities on the site after which its restoration and renovation were completed. A renewed circulation sequence organizes the visitor experience, beginning with a landscaped forecourt that buffers the urban context and frames the entry. Inside, a series of gently curving pathways lead to new niche alcove enclosures arranged with geometric clarity, balancing intimacy and openness. The total niches for cremated remains were increased to 8,500. The Columbarium renovation reimagines a historic San Francisco landmark as a serene, contemporary sanctuary that honors memory while embracing the city’s evolving architectural heritage.
