Heller Manus Architects has spent 20 years developing a diversified, client oriented firm. We have always avoided a singular signature approach. Instead, we focus on finding the ideal design solution for each commission. The firm’s portfolio of projects has been expanding since 1984. While projects range from master plans to in-fill buildings, large and small-scale retail designs to high-rise office towers, transit shelters to City Halls, and Beaux-Arts landmark renovations to streamlined transportation facilities, all share a common characteristic: high-quality, cost-effective design, sensitive to the project users’ function, site, and civic significance. In addition to numerous commissions in the San Francisco Bay Area, the firm has completed prominent buildings throughout the United States, many of which have been honored with national awards for their design quality and seamless contextuality. Longstanding client relationships, including nationally prominent organizations, and repeat business testify to the success of Heller Manus’ unique personal approach.

Buildings for the 21stCentury
After the decades of philosophical stability in design, architecture in the late 20th Century entered a period of profound indecision. With Modernism at an end, Postmodernism, Historicism and Deconstructivist styles, along with many philosophical design approaches competed for the privilege of becoming the next great movement. In reaction to this ever-changing landscape, Heller Manus’ philosophy has consistently evolved based on the following tenets: a respect for continuity and context, particularly in the urban setting; a celebration of visual richness and texture through contemporary use of materials, pattern, ornamentation, detail, and shadow relief; and the harmonious balance of technical and aesthetic demands. In short, we wish to be timeless in our approach. Our designs express not only functional purpose, but physical and social context as well — ensuring that our buildings will avoid the transitory curse of the styles of the last few years, retaining quality and currency for generations to come.

Approvals Expertise
In addition to a national reputation for architectural excellence, Heller Manus has a long-established track record of upholding high-quality design standards while obtaining approvals from governing agencies and neighborhood groups under the most difficult of circumstances. Where some professionals have encountered only obstacles in the restrictive planning rules set by San Francisco or other cities, we have found design opportunities. By understanding the public nature of buildings in urban settings, we are able to integrate our public experience into the design process. This approach consistently produces buildings with strong, popular appeal. Most importantly, our understanding of governmental and neighborhood requirements allows the firm to manage the approvals process, rather than being managed by it.

Virtual Previewing
Gone are the days when clients committed millions of dollars to a project solely on the basis of colored pencil sketches and a cardboard model. Now, using an array of computer aided design tools, Heller Manus’ skilled architects can produce a variety of three-dimensional perspective models and animated “walk-throughs” - a virtual preview of the prospective building, complete with massing and context. The firm relies on CAD techniques to prepare all designs, documentation, and presentation materials, permitting high-speed image generation and quick turnaround at critical stages in both the design and production process. Heller Manus also leverages the Internet to facilitate coordination among project team members, thereby speeding project delivery.
